Rhinusa tetra

Rhinusa tetra is a beetle -type from the family of weevils .

features

The beetles are between 1.5 and 5.5 millimeters long. The great variation in length is explained by the pronounced tendency of Rhinusa tetra to form subspecies. Their oval-shaped black body is covered with whitish, yellowish or light brown hairs. The pronotum is at its widest point more than twice as wide as at the front edge. The species differs from other Rhinusa species in that it is relatively broad in shape, making the beetles appear stockier.

distribution

Rhinusa tetra occurs in Central and Southern Europe. In the east they occur as far as the Caucasus and Siberia. The species was introduced to North America in the 20th century. In the meantime, it is used in certain places for biological pest control against the small-flowered mullein that has been introduced.

Way of life

The host and food plants of Rhinusa tetra include various representatives of the mullein ( Verbascum ) and brownwort ( Scrophularia ), in particular the small-flowered mullein ( Verbascum thapsus ) and the water figwort ( Scrophularia auriculata ). The common milkweed ( Asclepias syriaca ) is another host plant . The adults can be seen between May and September. The larvae mine on the stems of their host plants.
