Acromelia

Acromelia , mesomelia and rhizomelia denote congenital shortening of an extremity . They are forms of dysmelia .

  • Acromelia describes the shortening of the distal parts (fingers or toes) in particular ,
  • Mesomelia the shortening of the middle parts, i.e. forearms or lower legs and
  • Rhizomelia the shortening of the proximal parts, i.e. upper arms or thighs.
  • In contrast to mesomelia, hemimelia also describes the very frequent additional changes distal on the hand or foot.

etymology

The words are derived from the ancient Greek μέλος mélos 'limb' as well

  • ἄκρος ákros 'at the end'
  • μέσος mésos 'in the middle'
  • ῥίζωμα rhizome , root, origin '.
