Rišards Labanovskis (born February 15, 1940 in Daugavpils ) is a Latvian journalist , philologist and politician .

Life

Labanovskis is of Polish descent. He graduated from high school in Sigulda . After studying philology at the University of Latvia , he worked as a radio and television editor. In the late 1980s he was involved in the Latvian Popular Front and later chaired the Council of National Minorities. In 1998 he was elected to parliament as a member of the Latvian Social Democratic Labor Party . In 2002 he switched to the newly founded Social Democratic Party .

Labanovskis was the editor of the Polish-Latvian dictionary and translator of Polish literature.
