Riad al-Asaad

Riad al-Asaad ( Arabic رياض موسى الأسعد, DMG Riyāḍ Mūsā al-Asʿad ; * 1961 ) is a former engineer and colonel in the Syrian Air Force .

On July 29, 2011, together with former officers of the Syrian army, he announced the establishment of the Free Syrian Army , which he is leading from the regions of Syria liberated from the rebels .

Al-Asaad is Sunni . His family, like many families of rebel leaders, was executed in-house by government troops, according to the UN.

On March 24, 2013, al-Asaad was seriously injured in an explosion in Deir ez-Zor province .
