Richard Davy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Richard Davy (* around 1465; † around 1507) was an English organist , choir director and composer.

Life

Nothing is known about childhood and adolescence. In 1483 he became a member of Magdalen College in Oxford and from 1490 took over the position of organist and choir director. After he left college in 1494, his trail is lost. Various details of people with the name Richard Davy have come down to us (including in Blickling ), but none of them could be identified with the composer Richard Davy.

Davy essentially created sacred music. His four-part St. Matthew Passion is considered the oldest passion music in England and is still famous today for its compositional quality.
