Richard Thomas (data protection officer)
Richard Thomas (* 1949 ) is a British data protection expert .
Thomas was named Information Commissioner on November 30, 2002 and served from December 2, 2002 to 2009. He was independent from the government and informed parliament directly. The supervisory authority he headed during this time is responsible for the Data Protection Act 1998 , the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and the Environmental Regulations 2004 .
Thomas was the UK representative on the Article 29 Working Party .
