Riddell is an American company that specializes in American football sporting goods . The headquarters were for a long time in Rosemont , Illinois ; In 2017 the company moved to new premises in neighboring Des Plaines .

The company was founded by John Tate Riddell. Riddell first invented the removable bracket and later, in 1939, the first spring-loaded plastic helmet. In 2008 Dan Arment was named President of Riddell. Arment had previously served as the vice president and manager of BRG Sports, Riddell's parent company, which in turn is owned by public company Fenway Partners . Fenway bought the company from Lincolnshire Management in 2003 . In 2008, Riddell sued competitor Schutt Sports . Two years later, Schutt filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Riddell. Riddell won and Schutt went bankrupt.
