Riemer's world

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The exhibition “Riemer's World” is a permanent exhibition opened in 2018 with natural history and ethnological objects in the museum of the municipal collections in the armory in Lutherstadt Wittenberg .

Relation to the overall museum concept in the armory

The exhibition is located on the upper floor (the attic) of the armory. Approx. 1500 exhibits from the collection of the Berlin glove manufacturer Julius Riemer (1880–1959) are shown on over 500 square meters of exhibition space. The collector Julius Riemer is presented as part of the history of the city in the 20th century. In this way, the city history exhibition “Wittenberg through the centuries” is supplemented and expanded on the first floor. At the same time, the tour started with the exhibits known as the "Crown Jewels" on the ground floor. Nevertheless, according to the planners, the two main floors of the museum also function independently of each other and differ greatly in their museum character: The Julius Riemer collection is presented as a show magazine. More than 75 percent of all objects exhibited in the arsenal belong to the field of natural history and ethnology. As on the first floor, the floor was deliberately not divided into smaller individual rooms. The architectural features of the historic building can thus be experienced by visitors.

Exhibition content

The exhibition "Riemer's World" is the only permanent ethnological exhibition in Saxony-Anhalt that presents exhibits from different continents. Objects from natural history and ethnology are shown in roughly equal proportions. A focus within the ethnological department is on Africa and Oceania. Ancient Egypt, pre-Columbian America, and Japan are also represented by exhibits. The natural history department is organized according to animal classes and focuses on primates, other mammal classes, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish, as well as invertebrates. A showcase is dedicated to osteology and houses the skeleton of a giant alc as a special treasure . Another showcase presents the indigenous vertebrate fauna and thus refers to the regional and city history. Another exhibition area deals biographically with Julius Riemer as a collector and patron and reconstructs his study.

Backgrounds and didactic concepts

The exhibition of the Wittenberg Municipal Collections was developed in cooperation with the Friends of the Julius Riemer Collection over several years of preparation. The concept and equipment of the exhibition was designed by the Kocmoc company. The ethnologist Nils Seethaler worked as a scientific advisor and wrote the exhibition texts. With the help of around 100 guiding texts in the exhibition, scientific content is conveyed in order to make the large number of exhibits didactically accessible. 15 key objects each on natural history and ethnology are highlighted in separate showcases and form a red thread to walk through the room. At the center of the exhibition is an installation in the form of a carousel, which experimentally relates ethnological and scientific exhibits and thus alludes to the possibility of linking knowledge. On this floor there is also a room that is particularly available for museum education. An expanded museum educational program for the presentation of specific specialist topics is planned.
