The Mossyrock Dam is a dam on the Cowlitz River in Washington State in the USA. The reservoir is called Riffe Lake (formerly: Davisson Reservoir ) and is 37 km long. It is located 45 km east-southeast of Centralia .
The hydroelectric power station at the dam generates electricity for the city of Tacoma . The dam also serves to prevent flooding. Furthermore, the lake is a recreation area in summer and winter. In winter, the water level is lowered to make room for floods that usually come in spring. In summer, water is released to supply the river with sufficient water for the fish.
Mossyrock is also the name of a nearby town that has been rebuilt in place of the villages of Reefs and Kosmos that were lost in the reservoir. The former name Davisson comes from an engineer who oversaw the project, but the reservoir was soon renamed in honor of the town of Reefs. Reefs are pronounced like "life". “Rifle Lake” is believed to be a misspelling that indicates a meaning that was not properly understood.
The dam , a weight arch dam, is around 185 meters high and is the ninth highest dam in the USA. Other sources speak of a wall height of only 111 m and a maximum water depth of 110 m. This is the height above the ground (above the valley floor), while 185 m is the height above the foundation.
There are other dams at Cowlitz:
- Cowlitz Falls has a 70 megawatt power plant and was completed in 1994.
- The Mayfield Dam is 56 m high and 259 m long and lies 21 km below the Mossyrock Dam.
