The Riga Reservoir is an artificial lake in the lower reaches of the Daugava River , 35 km from the river mouth. The reservoir was built between 1966 and 1974 to supply Riga with water . It has an area of up to 42.3 km² and a volume of up to 339 million cubic meters.

The lake begins in the Lejasdaugava valley, its lower part is in the Ropazi plain. The rivers Ogre , Ķilupe , Kausupe , Līčupe and Raģupīte flow into the reservoir.

Dams and bank structures were built by building a 27 km long reservoir that damaged the tip of the dry Daugava River. The water reservoir was flooded with the eastern tip of Dole Island, several surrounding islands (Martinsala, Nulpe) and rapids over Dole Island. In the long-lived part of the Daugava Valley, several archaeological monuments (settlement sites, old tombs) were destroyed. The rising water level created five new islands with a total area of around 200 ha. The largest is the Dead Island on the former peninsula between Daugmali and Saulkalni . On one of the new islands across from Ikšķile are the ruins of St. Meinard's Church.
