A front sight is part of the aiming device for rifles ( air rifle or small-bore rifle ) in sport shooting .

A front sight is located at the front end on top of the barrel of the weapon within the so-called "front sight tunnel". A bead can be made of glass, clear plastic, or metal. A metal front sight is shown in the illustration opposite. In the opening in the middle of the front sight, the shooter centers the ring face of a target . The black rings (here rings 4 to 10) are centered in the front sight. The size of the viewing opening in the middle of the front sight can be varied with different front sight or an adjustable front sight with iris diaphragm .

No enlargement may be built into the ring grain for shooters up to 45 years of age. From the age of 46, a magnification of 1.5 times can be used for diopter compensation (so-called "eagle eye"). Colored glasses as an insert may be used to e.g. B. to filter out haze or reflections (can occur with open shooting ranges ).
