Life

Messmer is the originator and founder of the modern "Windelfrei", which originated in Switzerland. Her work at the University Children's Hospital in Bern with premature babies aroused her interest in early childhood development. During her stays abroad, she observed a "natural interaction and a peaceful and harmonious relationship between parents and children" among the traditional and indigenous peoples , from her point of view in contrast to the industrialized countries. If, according to Messmer, the biological systems are used correctly, this is also possible with us.

The focus of her educational and literary work lies in the promotion and practical implementation of this view. She relies heavily on Maria Montessori and the theory of “ sensitive phases ”. She was the first to point out that early cleanliness in infants is subject to a sensitive phase ( neural window ) that is open from the first day of life and closes towards the end of the third month of life. It shows that a baby sends appropriate signals and, from birth, relieves itself in a place provided for this purpose if the mother encourages and prevents it. This development step is biological, but must be stimulated accordingly for its development. The first year of life therefore becomes the most important year in a person's life. It describes other important sensitive phases. She substantiates her theory with the fundamental findings of Jean Liedloff .

Her work has been received in journals and in the media for the general public. She is supported in her work by the neurobiologist and brain researcher Gerald Hüther .
