The Ritskemooi or Rixt van het Oerd is the main character in a story that takes place on the Dutch island of Ameland . A statue in the center of the village of Buren reminds of the story.

Content: The old, needy fisherman's widow Rixt is said to have lived in the town of Oerd with her son Sjoerd. They kept themselves afloat with their cow's milk and whatever flotsam they found, but avoided the village community. When Sjoerd grew up he became a seaman and left Ameland. For a while Rixt was able to get by on his own, but then there was less and less flotsam to find. The sea had become safer. After all, she was so desperate that on a dark, stormy night she tied a lantern between the horns of her cow and drove it onto the highest dune of Oerd, in order to fool the ships into a safe harbor . Their ruse succeeded, in fact a ship ran aground on a sandbank , capsized and broke in the surf . She collected all the valuables and found one of the sailors wearing a ring. She took the ring and looked out of curiosity the sailor in the face and recognized her son Sjoerd. Since then she is said to still haunt the Oerder dunes, where you can hear her "Sjoe-oe-oe-oerd" when the storm winds over Ameland.

There is no historical evidence of this history, but it is an integral part of the Ameland cultural heritage. The frequently used German term "beach witch" is misleading and probably due to the cliché appearance of the statue.
