life and career

De Vere Capell was born in January 1920 to Arthur de Vere Capell and Alice Capell, née Currie. His father died when he was three. He spent some time in an orphanage where he was amazed when the director told him that one day he would be the Earl of Essex . That interest was rekindled many years later when he received a newspaper article from a friend saying that the Earl of Essex's heir might be an American, Bladen Horace Capell. This led to an intensive search by de Vere Capell, with numerous correspondence with many distant and previously unknown relatives. Ultimately, he proved that his great-grandfather Algernon Capell was the older brother of Bladen's great-great-grandfather Adolphus Capell.

He married Doris Margaret Tomlinson in 1942, daughter of George Frederick Tomlinson. They had a son, Paul, who later became the 11th Earl of Essex. When the 9th Earl died in 1981, it was 8 years before Robert could take his seat in the House of Lords . There he sat as a crossbencher . Its membership ended by the House of Lords Act 1999 . He did not run for one of the remaining seats.

Capell died in 2005 at the age of 85. His son inherited his title.
