Robert Kalina (born June 29, 1955 ) is a former designer of banknotes (official job title: banknote designer ) at the Oesterreichische Nationalbank .

500 Schilling Otto Wagner (1986)
1000 Schilling Karl Landsteiner (1997)
10 euros (2002)

All Austrian schilling notes since 1982 were based on his designs.

He achieved international fame, however, through the drafts of the euro banknotes , which were selected in September 1996 by a jury from 44 competing drafts. A particular difficulty was the requirement that the design should not give rise to national jealousy. While many other designs stuck to the banknote tradition and at least used anonymous portraits instead of identifiable personalities, Kalina completely dispensed with faces and used motifs from European building history with its transnational styles .

After their Europe-wide introduction, the design of the euro banknotes was generally rated as successful, as no national references were discernible in them. No major redesign is planned for the near future. The design for the second series of euro banknotes , which has been issued since 2013, is also based on his drafts.

Robert Kalina also designed the 200 convertible mark banknote from Bosnia-Herzegovina , which was introduced in 2002 and which is completely different from the other denominations.

He is also responsible for the design of the banknotes and coins of the Azerbaijan manat introduced on January 1st, 2006 .
