Hahnel is the author of several books that deal with a non-hierarchical, participatory economic system. This economic order should get by without hierarchies and markets, since in Hahnel's opinion the market economy promotes inequality and unemployment .

The specialization should be retained, but it is not seen as an absolute category; the work should not be dull, but everyone should have a fair share of attractive and less attractive work to do. There is no private ownership of the means of production . This is to prevent power from being concentrated in the hands of relatively few people.
