The Rochuskapelle (Duisburg) is a baroque chapel in the Duisburg district of Huckingen on the corner of Raiffeisenstrasse (formerly Unterstrasse) and Angerhauser Strasse. The chapel bears the patronage of St. Rochus of Montpellier , who is venerated as the patron saint against plague and infectious diseases.

building

The chapel in its current form is a comparatively simple building with a curved gable front. A wrought iron cross is attached to the gable. Wall anchors showing the year 1746 are visible in the gable wall.

The inventory of the chapel includes a Rochus sculpture, which represents the Rochus legend: St. Rochus stands on a baroque plinth decorated with a winged putti head. The Pestheilige is dressed in a pilgrim garment carries a in the right hand pilgrim rod and pointing with the left hand on a Pestbeule on the left thigh. An angel kneels to the right treating the wound. On the left is a dog with bread in its mouth.

history

The Rochus Chapel is probably older than 1746. Exact information about its construction is not available. It "almost fell to the ground" in 1746 after having been erected "several years" earlier. In the year 1746 shown on the gable, the chapel was rebuilt. It is believed that before that it was of a rather provisional character and that it had deteriorated over the years. When it was rebuilt, it received its present form.

Another thorough renovation was carried out by the Office of the State Conservator of North Rhine-Westphalia between 1965 and 1967.
