The Rocky Mountains Forest Reserve is a protected area in Alberta on the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains .

In contrast to the national parks, the area created in 1910 allows economic use through logging and hunting .

In 1911 and 1913 the area was enlarged, in 1914 and 1917 areas were given to Jasper National Park and the Rocky Mountains Park . The size continued to fluctuate due to enlargement in 1924 and the transfer of areas to Jasper National Park in 1927 and to both national parks in 1930.

The Rocky Mountains Forest Reserve now consists of three parts, separated by the Crowsnest Highway (Canada Highway 3) and Alberta Highway 22.

The southernmost part connects directly to the Waterton Lakes National Park , it includes the valley of the Castle River and extends to close to the Crowsnest Highway. Another small area is east of Highway 22 in the Kananaskis area .

Most of the reserve extends along the border with British Columbia or the eastern border of the Canadian national parks in the Rocky Mountains.
