The Roden Crater is an approximately 400,000 year old extinct volcano in the volcanic field of the San Francisco Peaks near Flagstaff , Arizona.

Art project

The land art - artist James Turrell was looking for a suitable project for a mountain 1974 by plane. He found it in the Roden Crater and, with great difficulty, found sponsors for a purchase in the 1970s. Since 1974 he has been installing a huge perceptual art object that runs through the volcano. Turrell has milled a network of corridors and rooms into the volcanic belly; the light of individual celestial bodies penetrates into the interior of the crater through astronomically calculated openings that are oriented towards the sky, where it is captured and reflected by objects, thus creating forms only from light in the room. His “Skyspaces” react primarily to different qualities of light, but also to sounds. His goal is a synaesthetic architecture of knowledge that helps people to look at their own perception. A limited visit is possible for a donation of $ 5000. Additional costs for room, board, and tour add up to $ 1,500 for a total of $ 6,500 per person.
