Roger I. (Foix)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Roger I († 1067 ) was a Count of Foix and since 1050 as Roger II Count of a part of Carcassonne . He was the second son of his predecessor, Count Bernard Roger, and his wife Gersende von Bigorre.

Roger I was the first of his family to call himself Count von Foix . At his death (around 1036/1038) his father had ordered the detachment of the pays de Foix (land of Foix) from the county of Couserans , the rest of which was given to Roger's younger brother, Peter Bernard , to appoint Roger as heir. To this land, Roger was granted countial rights, which ultimately established the county of Foix.

In 1034 Roger entered into an inheritance agreement with his uncle, Bishop Peter Roger of Girona , according to which both would inherit each other. Roger was to get all the non-church properties that the bishop owned. These were mainly castles in the county of Carcassonne, where the bishop officiated as a count. In return, Roger was ready to recognize his uncle as a liege lord and to transfer the guardianship of his successor in Foix in case Roger died too early. However, this case did not occur, instead the episcopal uncle died in 1050 and Roger was able to take over his worldly property (the county of Carcassonne ).

In Carcassonne, Roger was able to strengthen his position in 1064 when he was supported by his cousin, Count Roger III. his inheritance rights to the rest of the county were confirmed, as both ancestors of Count Roger I the Old had once ordered. They shared jurisdiction and Roger III. pledged to help arms against any aggressor who should appear against Roger I, with the exception of the Counts of Toulouse , who Roger III. had previously recognized as feudal lords.

Count Roger I died in 1067. He was married to a woman whose name was unknown, but with whom he had no children, which is why he was succeeded by his brother Peter Bernard and his son Roger II in the county of Foix . Roger III took over his possessions in Carcassès, who was able to unite the entire county of Carcassonne under himself, but he died a short time later himself.
