Roland Prize for Art in Public Space

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Roland Prize for Art in Public Space is an art prize that has been awarded every three years by the Bremen Sculptor Prize Foundation since 1990. Its name is reminiscent of the Bremen Roland , a sculpture erected in 1404 on Bremen's market square, which is not only a symbol of the city, but is also one of the oldest free-standing sculptures in Germany.

Sponsor and award

On the occasion of the 90th birthday of the sculptor Gerhard Marcks , the city of Bremen set up the Bremen Sculpture Prize Foundation in 1989 . The purpose of the foundation was to award the Bremen Sculpture Prize . After realigning the content, the prize has been awarded under its current name since 1990. It is endowed with 15,000 euros and is intended to honor artists who “open up new fields of thought and action for art in public space with their work.” The award winners are asked to realize a work of art or art project in Bremen's urban space.
