Rolle Stewart (born May 20, 1944 in Spokane , Washington ) is a former celebrity of the American media world.

In the beginning, his goal was to be seen on television as often as possible, which is why he put on an afro-look wig that he had dyed brightly. In public recordings of various sporting events, it was broadcast particularly often because of its originality. He was also called Rainbow Man because of his brightly colored hair .

After converting to the born again Christians in 1980 , he used his popularity to draw attention to religious content with printed T-shirts and signs. The John 3:16 shield made it particularly famous . It refers to a passage in the Gospel of John (Eng. "John", chapter 3, verse 16):

"For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son so that all who believe in him might not be lost, but have eternal life."

Roles Stewart has appeared at golf tournaments, soccer matches, the Olympic Games, Republican and Democratic party events, and at the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana.

He was arrested in 1992 after attempting to hold two men and a cleaning lady hostage at a California hotel , with the end of the world imminent in six days. He also threatened to shoot planes at the nearby Los Angeles Airport and covered the windows with "John 3:16" posters. For this hostage situation, Stewart is currently serving a triple life sentence because he refused a plea deal . In 2002, parole was examined for the first time, the last time it was rejected in 2010. The next exam can take place in 2017 at the earliest.

His life became the subject of the 1997 documentary The Rainbow Man / John 3:16 by Sam Green . A Steve Taylor song called him the Bannerman .
