Roman II (Moldova)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Roman II (* around 1426; † July 2, 1448 in Krakow ) was ruler of the Principality of Moldova from July 13, 1447 to February 1448 .

Roman was the son of Prince Iliaș I , who temporarily ruled the country together with his brother Stephan II , and the Polish Maria Holszanska, sister-in-law of the Polish King Władysław II Jagiełło . Under the impression of the conflict between the two brothers, in the course of which Iliad was blinded, he fled to Poland with his mother in 1443. In 1447 he returned with Polish support, eliminated Stephan II and ascended the throne himself. He shared his power with another uncle, Petru III. who had already ruled for a time together with Stephan II. However, this fragile structure only lasted a few months: When Petru married the sister of the Hungarian regent Johann Hunyadi , who was considerably older than himself, in February 1448 , his power was great enough to claim sole rule. Roman had to flee to Krakow, where he died on July 2, 1448 at the age of only 22.
