Ronald de Leeuw (born October 5, 1948 in Rotterdam ) is a Dutch art historian and former director of the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam .

life and work

Ronald de Leeuw studied art history in Los Angeles and at Leiden University . From 1977 to 1984 he worked as the main supervisor in the Service Scattered Reich Collections. Then he was chief curator of the collections in the Reich Service for Fine Arts for a year. In 1986 he became director of the Van Gogh Museum. He became even better known as director of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam from 1996 until his retirement in 2008. From 1994 to 2008 he was also a professor at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam . He has been involved in the concept for the House of European History since 2008 .

As an art historian, De Leeuw is a specialist in Dutch landscape painting of the 19th century, for which he has created many publications and catalogs. During his time at the Rijksmuseum, the structural renovation began. In terms of content, he was looking for relationships between history and art. His saying is well known: Art is iets dat je deelt. As ever het niet deelt, het helemaal niets. ("Art is something you share. If you don't share it, it's nothing.")

On April 29, 2005 De Leeuw was appointed officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau .
