history

After opening in 1914, the size of the zoo area was 1.61 hectares. In 1916 the zoo was enlarged for the first time with a bear enclosure and a water bird pond. In 1933 the area had already doubled, and in 1955 the park was enlarged again with the addition of a petting zoo and a monkey enclosure.

Bad times

The zoo began to deteriorate in the early 1960s when Syracuse City's tax revenue began to decline, cutting the financial budget to support the zoo.

In 1974 two young people managed to break into the zoo and kill or injure around 40 animals. Despite a permit for a further expansion of around 7.3 hectares, the city of Syracuse transferred the responsibility of the zoo to Onondaga County.
