The Rosh HaNikra cable car is a cable car at the kibbutz Rosh HaNikra on the border between Israel and Lebanon , which allows access to the caves of the same name. It is said to be the steepest and shortest cable car in the world.
route
The entrance station of the cable car is next to a parking lot on the coastal road a few meters from the border and above the 70 m high, steep, white limestone cliffs. The 2-minute journey begins with a slight incline to a cable car pillar directly on the edge of the rock face and from there with a 60 ° incline down to the "valley station" located directly on the sea just above the water. This station is located in a building that has a rock-like white wall facing the sea to protect against the spray of the waves.
technology
The cable car was built in 1987 by Doppelmayr in collaboration with the Technion Institute in Haifa , the cabins for 15 people were supplied by Swoboda . It is a single-cable aerial tramway . The cabins do not hang, as usual, with a running gear on a carrying rope and are pulled back and forth by a pulling rope, but are permanently attached to the hoisting rope with four fixed clamps each.
The drive and control of the system are located in the mountain station. A large pulley and the tension weights are located in the valley station.
In very stormy weather, the system has to stop operating not only because of the high wind speed, but also to protect the cabins from breakwaters, which, according to the company's website, is the case on two to three days a year.
