Rosecliff Mansion

Rosecliff Mansion is a former Beaux Arts- style mansion in Newport , Rhode Island that is now open as a museum.

It was built from 1898 to 1902 according to a design by the architect Stanford White as a summer residence for the silver mine heiress Theresa Fair Oelrichs and her husband Hermann Oelrichs , who had acquired the Rosecliff estate from the estate of George Bancroft , who died in 1891 . The estate became the property of the Newport County Preservation Society as a bequest in the 1970s .

The building, inspired by the Grand Trianon , but also characterized by Palladian style elements, has a heart-shaped staircase and Newport's largest ballroom. In 1974 it served as a glamorous film set for the novel adaptation The Great Gatsby with Robert Redford . The ballroom was also used as a location for the film True Lies starring Arnold Schwarzenegger .
