It was founded in 1982 and offers training up to Doctor of Veterinary Medicine . In 2014, the RUSVM also began a Master of Science and PhD in Public Health , Global Animal Health , Conservation Medicine and other research areas of the school. The school is in St. Kitts and the administration is in Downers Grove, Illinois , United States . RUSVM is accredited with the Council on Education of the American Veterinary Medical Association .

Students come from all over the world, with most being citizens of the United States as they have the opportunity to apply for financial assistance under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 . By 2019, more than 5,500 veterinarians had graduated from RUSVM. The teaching trimesters start in September, January and May and studies can be started in any trimester.

history

The RUSVM was founded in 1982 by entrepreneur Robert Ross , who also founded the Ross University School of Medicine in 1978. Ross got the idea because a friend's son couldn't get admission to a medical school in the United States. He then founded Ross University to give him and others the opportunity to become doctors.

In 2003 RUSVM was bought by the DeVry Education Group (now Adtalem Global Education ).

In 2014 RUSVM founded four research centers.

Accreditation

In 2011, RUSVM was accredited by the Council on Education of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA-COE).

In addition, RUSVM is accredited by the St. Christopher & Nevis Accreditation Board Ministry of Education for the DVM (Doctor of Vtereinary Medecine) and the Ross University Veterinary Teaching Hospital is accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association .

In July 2014, RUSVM received accreditation for the Postgraduate Studies Program from the St. Christopher & Nevis Accreditation Board .

Faculty

The faculty and staff of the RUSVM have already won several prizes for research and teaching: In February 2013, the Association of American Veterinary Colleges (AAVMC) presented Mary Anna Thrall with the Distinguished Teacher Award . Many of the faculty members are top researchers in their respective subjects.

Teaching

The college's curriculum follows models found in other veterinary schools in the United States. Seven semesters are offered in St. Kitts, followed by a year of Clinical Education in one of the more than twenty AVMA Veterinary Schools in the United States or at the AVMA- Atlantic Veterinary College in Canada . The pre-clinical program includes a series of “introduction to clinics” courses in which experience can be gained in small groups. The students are trained on the university's own herds of cattle, horses, monkeys and sheep.

research

The school has set up four Research Centers, each of which is committed to the One Health concept for developing and tropical countries:

  • The One Health Center for Zoonoses and Tropical Veterinary Medicine (Center for a holistic view of zoonoses and tropical veterinary medicine)
  • The Center for Integrative Mammalian Research (Center for Integrative Mammal Research)
  • The Center for Conservation Medicine and Ecosystem Health (Center for Conservation Medicine and ecosystem health)
  • The Center for Research and Innovation in Veterinary and Medical Education (center for research and innovation in veterinary medicine and training)

The employees are engaged in research projects with a financial volume of $ 21 million dollars. Almost 100 scientific publications were created in 2014. Approx. 400 students take part in research projects each year and there is a special course on the principles of veterinary research.

internationalization

In February 2012, RUSVM entered into a partnership with the Moredun Research Institute to jointly create better research opportunities and enable further training opportunities for the students.

RUSVM also recruits students in Singapore through international research grants. In October 2014 RUSVM signed a cooperation agreement with Ngee Ann Polytechnic in Singapore.
