Mary Charles George

Mary Charles George OBE (born May 10, 1913 in Phillips Village, Christ Church Nichola Town , St. Kitts and Nevis , † March 18, 2008 in Molyneux ) was a teacher from St. Kitts and Nevis. She taught in schools in St. Kitts for 43 years before moving to the Virgin Islands , where she taught for another decade. She was the first woman in St. Kitts and Nevis to run for public office. For her contributions to education in the Caribbean, she was awarded the Order of the British Empire and a life membership in the Caribbean Union of Teachers . A hospital in Molyneux, St. Kitts and the Teaching Excellence Award from the St. Kitts Teachers' Union are named after her.

Life

Mary Georgina McGregor Charles was born on May 10, 1913 in Phillips Village , Parish Christ Church Nichola Town , St. Kitts . Her parents were Henry and Francis Charles. She first attended Leach Infant School in Phillips Village and then Estridge Government School . At age twelve, she took the Seventh Standard Exam and enrolled in the Pupil-Teacher Program . This program was widespread in the British West Indies (Anglophone Caribbean). It enabled students from the ages of 14 to 17 to continue their education with reduced tuition fees in return for teaching younger students. At the end of an additional three-year course and a final exam, the pupil teachers qualified as uncertified teachers . When they took part in the program for another three years and retested, they became fully qualified teachers.

Career

After successfully completing three such exams, Charles received a scholarship in 1932 for a two-year course at the Spring Gardens Teacher Training College in Antigua . She returned to St. Kitts in 1934 and worked as an unpaid teacher at Estridge Government School because she could not get a paid job. Until the following year, when she was employed as an Assistant Teacher at St. Paul's Government School . She taught there until 1945, when she got a job as Head Teacher in Palmetto Point at the Trinity Government School . After three years she returned to the Estridge Government School as Head Teacher. She lived in Molineux and rode her bike to school every day, for which she received a transportation allowance. In 1956 she was transferred to the Cayon Government School as Head Teacher , where she spent the next twelve years. During this time she was also a school inspector. The following year her sister, Isa Isaac, died and left five children. Charles followed the boys over and raised them. She returned to Molineux in 1968 and retired from civil service two years later.

Charles was a member of the Moravian Provincial Synod in Antigua in 1969 , as a member of the St. Kitts delegation. and briefly taught at the George Moody Stuart Memorial School at the Sugar Factory in Golden Rock , Basseterre . In 1971 she ran as the first female candidate in St. Kitts and Nevis for election to the People's Action Movement . She won the election and soon moved to the Virgin Islands. There she taught for 18 months in Tortola , British Virgin Islands , before moving on to Saint Croix , US Virgin Islands , where she also taught. In 1975 she married Valdemar Henrique George (1910-2000) and moved with him to Christiansted . George finally retired in 1978 after 53 years of teaching. The following year she was named a life member of the Caribbean Union of Teachers. In recognition of her many years of service to the education she became Queen Elizabeth II. In the New Year's Honors in 1985 with the Order of the British Empire awarded. The following year a hospital was completed in Molyneux and named Mary Charles Hospital in her honor .

After the death of her husband, George returned to St. Kitts. She died on March 18, 2008 in Molyneux. The St. Kitts Teachers' Union posthumously named an award after her, the "Mary Charles-George Award". The award is used to honor good teaching.
