The red bergamot is an old pear variety from the bergamot group , which is also called autumn bergamot , Trutzerbirne or Trutzerle, onion bergamot, onion pear or apple pear, and other local names used to exist.
It was probably made in France before 1768. The fruits are spherical to broadly round ("bergamot-shaped") and are therefore reminiscent of an apple, although a red skin color is rare. The stem is short and thick and the skin is usually very rusty .
Although the red bergamot was very popular for a long time, its population had already declined sharply before 1900. A number of old trees are still known in Franconia , some under the old name Trutzerle.
The treetop is spherical and of a sparse habit, on good soil it becomes medium-sized.
