When the construction of an air base in the middle of the previously untouched Schmarbeck Heath began in 1933 , it was necessary to create living space for the staff who would work there in the future. The 36-year-old architect Georg Sagebiel, appointed by the Reich Aviation Ministry , was initially responsible for the construction planning and was also responsible for the construction management for the actual air base. For the construction of the red settlement, it was replaced by the architect Wilhelm Kröger in 1933 at the instigation of the Berlin construction company Wohnbau GmbH . The groundbreaking ceremony took place on June 15, 1934, 1.6 km east of the neighboring town of Schmarbeck on the site of today's Jägerweg. The first 69 houses were already completed on October 1, 1934. It was then determined that the expansion of the building area was not possible because of the wet subsoil. Therefore, another 20 hectare site was acquired in 1935, 500 meters further west. In November 1936, the development of the red settlement was essentially complete, it now comprised 80 semi-detached houses and 15 single-family houses. In addition to the Jägerweg to the east, the western settlement area is bordered by the Heideweg in the north, Gartenstrasse in the south, and the Promenade and Hasenheide to the east and west.

The red settlement was built for the officers and senior officials working at the air base. The houses were of a much higher standard than in the settlements that were built at the same time for the workers (White S.) and the lower officials and NCOs (Gray S.). The red brick buildings of the Rote Siedlung have a large bathroom and a separate toilet, have central heating and have full basements. Several houses have balconies or terraces. In the 1990s, the red settlement was added to the list of architectural monuments in Faßberg .
