Red Monastery (Souhag)

The Red Monastery ( Deir Anba Bishai or Deir Anba Bishoi ) is a Coptic Orthodox monastery, which was named after the Egyptian saint Pischoi . The monastery is located around 4 km northwest of the White Monastery near the Upper Egyptian city of Sohag . The name of the monastery is derived from the red color of the building material of the outer walls. These consist of reddish burnt bricks . These walls are significantly thicker at the base than at the top, analogous to the walls of the ancient Egyptian temples. The Red Monastery is architecturally similar to the White Monastery .
