White Monastery (Sohag)
White Monastery (Deyr el-Abiad) is the name that has become conventional for the Schenute Monastery of Atripe in the Egyptian Sauhadsch governorate , although in the strict sense it means the preserved church building, not the entire complex.
The library of the White Monastery is the name given to the institution's rich holdings of books, the most important source for research into the Coptic - Sahidic literature and the South Egyptian liturgy . The total of around 10,000 preserved sheets of the codices, which are almost without exception today, are now scattered across half the world. Reconstructing these manuscripts as far as possible and editing and examining the traditional texts is an important task of Coptic Studies .
