The red time (also blocking time ) is a term used in traffic engineering and describes the time span between the end of the transition time (yellow time) and the start of the release time (green time) of a traffic light system . Depending on the control, a red-yellow signal can be inserted between the red signal and the green signal. This transition signal (also called red-yellow period t RG ) between the red period and the green period must be at least 1 second.

The red time t R is usually indicated to the road user by a red signal. The road user is then not allowed to enter the intersection and has to wait at the stop line until he receives the clearance signal.
