Rough Island (Scotland)
Rough Island ( German "the rough island" ) is located at Rockcliffe, southeast of Kippford , about 250 m from the northeast bank of the Rough Firth on the Solway Firth in Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland .
The small teardrop-shaped tidal island in the Urr estuary is around eight hectares in size, up to 24 m high and connected to the mainland by a dam at low tide . The dam to the island is under water for five hours during high tide.
Rough Island has been owned by the National Trust for Scotland since 1937 . The island is a bird sanctuary that is a breeding ground for oystercatchers and little ringed plovers in May and June , and should not be entered.
