Row Island

Row Island is a small island less than one mile in diameter in the group of East Antarctic Balleny Islands . It is just off the southeastern end of Young Island .

The British navigator John Balleny reported in 1839 about an island 16 km north of Young Island. He named this after J. Row, next to Charles Enderby (1798–1876) one of a total of seven British merchants who financed Balleny's Antarctic expedition (1838–1839). Since this supposed island could not be identified, the name was transferred to the island described here, which was discovered by the crew of the RRS Discovery II in 1936 as part of the Discovery Investigations .
