Rowlf the Dog

Rowlf is a muppet. The dog doll is the oldest character from the Muppet universe. It made its debut in 1962, almost 15 years before The Muppet Show came about. Rowlf appeared as a sidekick on the Jimmy Dean Show , which aired on ABC from 1963 to 1966 . Rowlf performed there in a seven- to eight-minute section chatting with Jimmy Dean on topics ranging from current politics to medicine and science. Rowlf tried to outdo Jimmy Dean with seemingly surprising remarks. Rowlf also sang at times. Over the course of the Jimmy Dean Show , Rowlf became so popular that at the end of its airtime he received more fan mail than Jimmy Dean himself. In the Muppet Show itself, Rowlf is an important supporting character who mainly appears on the piano and rarely gets into the chaos of the the rest of the show.

Rowlf was the first doll Don Sahlin made for Jim Henson . It was the first muppet doll in which Sahlin placed particular emphasis on the position and appearance of the eyes. Rowlf's facial expression, always surprised, was shaped by Sahlin. Rowlf was originally invented as an advertising character for Purina Dog Chow .

Rowlf is a so-called living hand doll . This means that she has two functional hands and therefore has to be played by two puppeteers. Usually Jim Henson played the head and the right hand, while a second puppeteer - usually Frank Oz - played the left hand. In scenes where Rowlf played the piano, Henson played the head while a second puppeteer operated both hands.

In 1993 a record was released under the name of "Rowlf the Dog". The album Ol 'Brown Ears Is Back brought mainly songs from the muppet show. These were sung by Jim Henson.
