history
The Edinburgh Botanical Garden was founded in 1670 for the cultivation of pharmaceutically usable plants. It was originally laid out at St. Anne's Yard near Holyrood Palace by Robert Sibbald and Andrew Balfour . This makes it the second oldest botanical garden in Great Britain (after the Botanical Garden at Oxford University) . From 1716 to 1956 the head of the garden, the Royal Keeper , was also always the Regius Professor of Plant Science .
The plantings were saved from excessive air pollution in 1763 and moved near the road to Leith . In 1820 the garden was moved to its current position at Inverleith .
In 1858 the "Temperate Palm House" was built, which is still the largest of its kind in Great Britain.
In 1929, the Botanical Gardens in Benmore became the first branch ("Regional Garden") of the Edinburgh Botanical Gardens. The Logan Botanical Garden followed in 1969, and the Dawyck Botanical Garden in 1978.
