A forerunner of the regiment, the Royal Newfoundland Regiment of Foot , already existed in 1795. In 1812, the Royal Newfoundland Regiment of Fencible Infantry played an important role in the British-American War . The Royal Newfoundland Regiment , which fought in the ranks of the British Army during World War I, was the only unit from North America involved in the Battle of Gallipoli . It suffered almost 90% casualties on the first day of the Battle of the Somme , July 1, 1916, and was almost wiped out. Today the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial commemorates this . After the end of the war, the regiment was disbanded in 1919.
In 1939 the regiment was reactivated as the Newfoundland Militia . Since 1949, when Newfoundland was annexed to Canada, the regiment has been part of the Canadian Army .
