The Royal United Services Institute (abbreviated RUSI , long form Royal United Services Institute for Defense and Security Studies , German : "Royal Institute of the United Armed Forces (for defense and security studies")) is an independent research institute in Great Britain , which deals with questions of national and international security. The institute was founded in 1831 by the Duke of Wellington and is based in Whitehall , London . The RUSI sees itself as "a professional forum in the UK for those involved in national and international defense and security."

The RUSI conducts its own research programs and organizes lectures, conferences and seminars. In addition, the RUSI publishes a magazine and other publications. In view of the conflict in eastern Ukraine, NATO's vice-commander for Europe, General Adrian Bradshaw, warned in a speech at RUSI that Russia could conquer areas belonging to the defense alliance and thus pose an "existential threat" to the West.
