Royal sail

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The royal sail is a square sail that is attached (attached) to the Royalrah and that is driven over the slab sail . If a square sailor has split Marts and Bramrahen (2nd / 3rd and 4th / 5th yard on the mast ), the Royalrahen represent the sixth “floor” in the rigging, with simple Mars and Bram sails the fourth.

If a square sail had split topsails , but simple bram sails , it was sometimes difficult to determine whether the ship had simple bram sails and royals or split bram sails without royals ( anniversary rig ). With the simple, very large topsails and split slab sails, the fifth sail was always the royal sail.

Sky and moon sails

Above the royal sail, the sky sail ( sky sail ) was still carried on some, above all American square ships . For example, the German five-masted barque Maria Rickmers and her sister ship company, the four-masted full ship Peter Rickmers , had sky sails.

As a final Rah (in very rare cases when tall ships , for example, some clippers ) there was the moon sailing (Engl. Moon sail).

Sky and moon sails contributed little to sailing energy.
