Ruby from Dairinis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rubin von Dairinis († 725 ), also called Ruibin Mac Connadh , was a monk and teacher of the Dairinis monastery . In contemporary annals he was recognized as the leading writer in the south of Ireland . Rubin is considered the first and most important author of the Collectio Canonum Hibernensis , the most important collection of canon law of the early Middle Ages. Since the second named author, Cú Chuimne , lived significantly longer and two different editors of the work came into circulation, it is partly assumed that the older version was written by Rubin and the later revisions and additions can be traced back to Cú Chuimne. No other works by him are known.

Remarks

  1. In the Annals of Ulster , in entry U725.4, he is referred to as magister bonus euangelii Christi , which indicates a role as a teacher. The latter is discussed in footnote 167 on page 363 of the article by TM Charles-Edwards.
  2. In the annals of the four masters he is described in entry M720.10 as the chief scribe of Munster .
  3. See Thurneysen's essay.
  4. This thesis was already supported by Thurneysen and confirmed by Howlett. However, Charles-Edwards argues that while he believes this conclusion is plausible, it is not compelling. See pages 343 and 344 of his essay.
