Rudolf Ippisch

Rudolf Ippisch ( April 4, 1878 - March 2, 1953 ) was an Austrian entrepreneur. He was an honorary citizen of Ebensee . Ippisch initiated the construction of the Feuerkogel cable car and promoted the Traunsee shipping .

Life

The trained shoemaker Rudolf Ippisch obtained a shipping license for the Traunsee in 1909 and in 1910 began to compete with the Elektra John Ruston, built by Lürssen , which already offered regular services on the lake with steamers. Unlike Ruston, Ippisch relied on electric drive.

In Ebensee he founded the Traunseer Motorbootgesellschaft with twenty other people. Already in 1911 and 1912 he was able to expand his fleet by four more vehicles, the Traunstein , the Glückauf , the Sonnstein and the Karbach . A timetable coordination between Ruston and Ippisch, which was requested by the district authority, meant that Rudolf Ippisch was able to extend his concession, which had initially only applied to the southern part of the Traunsee, because it had been agreed that the steamships would Serve the main courses and the electric ships should approach the smaller moorings.

In 1918, after he had bought Ruston's five steamers, he was able to combine its operation with his own, which was now called the Traunseer Schiffahrts-Gesellschaft . In the years after the First World War , Ippisch sold most of the steamers until only the Elisabeth and Gisela belonged to his fleet. The latter has been preserved and still runs on the Traunsee.

A gondola of the Feuerkogel cable car

In 1927 the Feuerkogel cable car was opened, the construction of which Ippisch had initiated. This railway was the first cable car in Upper Austria. It leads from Ebensee to the plateau of the Höllengebirge; the mountain station is 1569 meters above sea level.

As a result, tourism in the Salzkammergut was strongly promoted, which in turn benefited Ippisch's shipping company, which later also benefited from the Kdf trips . Ippisch therefore had the two old steamships completely overhauled in the 1920s and 1930s. He also acquired the Lenau motorboat in 1938 . According to the Sonnstein's plans , he had another ship built in-house, which, however, was fitted with a diesel engine: the Feuerkogel was put into operation in 1941. In the middle of World War II , Ippisch bought another ship called Möve .

After Rudolf Ippisch's death, the company, which was then known as Traunseer Schiffahrts- und Seilschwebebahn GmbH , passed into the hands of his nephew of the same name. Under his aegis, a ship was baptized in the name of his uncle. This Rudolf Ippisch is still in use on the Traunsee.
