The Rue Carreterie is a street in Avignon in the Vaucluse department in France .

history

The first recorded name of this street comes from the 14th century and was carreiria Cadrigerariorum (the "carter street "). It was one of the most important thoroughfares in the city center and the only one that led from one of the city gates directly to the Papal Palace . In 1392 it was called Carrieria magna vocatur la Carataria .

The surrounding street district was protected by the Saint-Lazare city wall, completed in 1364, for the construction of which the residents had provided 1,000 guilders. Worried about possible attacks by the Huguenots , the population financed the construction of a ravelin in 1568 to better protect the access from the Saint-Lazare gate. This was repaired between 1604 and 1621.

Place de la Belle Croix

In the course of the 15th century, an architectural innovation appeared in the papal city, which was called Croix de carrefour or "croix couvertes". This is a cross of saints that is covered by a vault supported by pillars. Avignon owned seven of these “Belles Croix”, of which the one on Rue Carreterie is said to have been the most beautiful. The memorial was verifiably located in 1426 at the intersection with Rue des Infirmières . It was reconstructed with stone from Embrun in 1597 at the expense of the Brotherhood of Notre-Dame-de-la-Major and destroyed in 1792. Another peculiarity of the street was the numerous “maisons à auvents” (houses with canopies). After decrees of the city council in the middle of the 16th century these were demolished.

Monuments

The most important buildings on the street include the birth house of Henri Bosco (No. 3) and the bell tower of the Augustinian Church , built between 1372 and 1377 . The Gothic entrance gate of the old Carmelite monastery dates from the 15th century. In the street there is also an old inn and the house where the patriot Lescuyer was born, who was murdered by papists on October 16, 1791 , which led to the massacre de la Glacière . The old chapel of the Pénitents Rouges was founded in 1700. In 1745 doctors from the medical faculty laid out a medicinal herb garden on what is now Agricol Perdiguier , which was replaced by a "plant garden" during the French Revolution.
