location

history

The first water wheel at Sewell on the Segura River was built in the fifteenth century. It was smaller than the current one and was designed to irrigate Alcantarilla's agricultural land and cattle trough.

Both wheels were made of wood and had 56 buckets for watering. In 1890 a larger water wheel was built to increase the flow rate. The wheel was reinforced in 1956 by a metal structure installed by the Alicante company Sociedad Metalúrgica Naval y Terrestre and corresponds to the wooden version built in 1890 with a diameter of 11 meters and a width of 1.90 meters. The current wheel has 72 metal scoops that carry the water from the river into the aqueduct , which is around 8 meters higher . From this aqueduct, which originally had 25 bends, the cultivation areas of the farmers were irrigated and the city wells supplied. The water wheel with the aqueduct later served the sugar factory, the sugar cane processed as a water supply.
