Rugemont Castle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rugemont Castle is an Outbound castle in the village of Ridgmont in the English administrative unit Central Bedfordshire .

Not much is known about this castle as it was first mentioned in the 12th century. It is thought to be a wooden castle, the fortress of the Wahull family and later the De Gray family . In 1276 Walter Beywin wrote that he had "seven Selions [strips of land] above Rugemont".

The castle appears to have been connected to Brogborough Manor , where Oliver Cromwell stayed for a short time during the English Civil War and made use of his moats.

At the place where Rugemont Castle is suspected, the remains of earthworks of a ring work from the early Middle Ages can be found today . Most of the site was destroyed when the Round House was built in the 19th century . Today it is considered a Scheduled Monument .
