The Ruj (Serbian Руј ; bulg. Руй ) (also Ruy ) is a 1706 m high mountain on the border between Serbia and Bulgaria , in the center of the Balkan Peninsula . The border stone between Serbia and Bulgaria stands on its summit. On the northeast slope there is a mountain hut, the Хижа "Руй" , which was only allowed to be visited by members of the border troops and prominent hunters due to its proximity to the border and its location in a restricted area before 1989.

On the slopes of the Ruj there are several smaller water sources that feed small streams. For the neighboring villages, water pipes are being built from these springs, which supply their households with drinking water. For example, right on the access road to the village of Zabel is an ancient water point with four outlets from which drinking water still flows. The ancient water pipe made of ceramic pipes leading to this water point has long been destroyed and the remains of it emerge as shards above the village during excavations, but this water point is now supplied from the municipal water pipe.

At the foot of the Ruj, above the village of Zabel in the orchards, the foundation walls of a formerly Roman fortress can be seen. The meadows at the foot of the Ruj show characteristic flat terraced steps, which indicate an earlier extensive field management and on the edges of which wild plum trees grow. On the mountain meadows, which were traditionally used for sheep grazing and the collection of medicinal herbs, the remains of trenches from the Serbian-Bulgarian War can still be seen as flat unevenness in the terrain.
