Romanian information service
The Serviciul român de informații ( SRI , German Romanian Information Service ) is the Romanian domestic secret service and is in part the successor organization of the former Securitate .
General
The Romanian intelligence service SRI was founded shortly after the Romanian Revolution in March 1990 by parliamentary resolution by Decree No. 181. The non-public decree of March 26, 1990 established that the service reports directly to the President, with some information rights granted to Parliament. In the beginning, the service actually acted as a kind of personal security service for President Ion Iliescu . In contrast to the former Securitate security service , the SRI manages with 15,000 employees.
National Security Act
In 1991, the duties of the service were described in a very general way in the Law on National Security of Romania (Law No. 51/1991). Accordingly, the service should protect Romania from
- Terrorism, treason, murder, armed uprisings,
- Trying to change the boundary line,
- Anti-Semitic or racist acts
Security forces are also allowed to enter private homes without a search warrant if they fear an acute "threat to national security". The Romanian Constitution declares the right to the inviolability of private communications, and the service is also prohibited from tapping phone calls / e-mails for political reasons, but the law allows lines of communication to be monitored by a prosecutor.
