Rumba (Cuba)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In connection with Cuba, rumba means primarily the Afro-Cuban rumba . However, the tournament variant of the Latin American dance rumba is also referred to as "Cuban".

The understanding of the word outside of Cuba is likely to be influenced by the fact that in 1906 sound recordings were made for the first time under the name "Rumba". They come from singers from the popular musical theater, and at that time the closing numbers of musical revues were called that.

The opinion is more widespread that the music and dance of Son Cubano in the USA in the 1920s could not be marketed as son and that a different name was therefore sought.
