Theo Buck
Theo Buck (born October 3, 1930 in Tübingen ; † October 25, 2019 in Aachen ) was a German specialist in German .
The professor emeritus at RWTH Aachen has made a name for himself primarily through his books on Goethe , Georg Büchner and Paul Celan . Other focal points of his work were research on Theodor Fontane , Georg Trakl , Ödön von Horváth , Bertolt Brecht , Uwe Johnson , Heiner Müller and Hans Joachim Schädlich .
Life
After studying German, Romance languages and history at the University of Tübingen , Buck received his doctorate there in 1957. From 1958 to 1963 he took over the management of the Remscheid Adult Education Center . In the 1960s he worked for the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) as a lecturer in Kinshasa ( Democratic Republic of the Congo ) and in Besançon ( France ) and as head of the program department at the Goethe-Institut Paris .
After editing at the University of Toulouse , he worked as director of the Heinrich-Heine-Haus of the Cité Universitaire in Paris in the 1970s and, in 1972, the professorship for modern German literature at the University of Göttingen with a focus on 20th century literature. In 1979 Buck was appointed professor for modern German literature at RWTH Aachen University; he followed 'Hans Schwerte' (who was exposed as Hans Ernst Schneider in 1995 ). He was retired in 1996.
As part of visiting professorships, Buck was also at the universities of Paris III (Sorbonne Nouvelle), Paris IV (Sorbonne), Paris X (Nanterre), the University of Bologna , the University of Antwerp , the Hebrew University of Jerusalem , the University of São Paulo , the Chung-Ang-University in Seoul and at Middlebury College ( Vermont / USA ).
For his services to the intellectual Franco-German exchange, Buck was awarded the “ Ordre des Palmes Académiques ” by the French state .
Buck died in October 2019 at the age of 89. The publication of a Paul Celan biography has been posthumously announced for the summer of 2020.
